Become an SSI Specialty Instructor with SSI. Becoming an SSI Specialty Instructor is easy. Continue your diving education as an instructor by enrolling in a Specialty Instructor Seminar for each of the diving specialties you would like to teach. Alternatively, you can co-teach the specialty you are interested in with an experienced Specialty Instructor or request a Verification Application of your experience and send it directly to SSI.

Expanding your repertoire not only makes you a more versatile educator but also advances your professional status. Teach more specialties to automatically earn the prestigious Advanced Open Water Instructor certification.

How the Training Works

  • Digital Learning & Academics: SSI has mastered the use of digital technology to make your professional learning experience easy. You can study the specialized academic frameworks anytime, anywhere at your own convenience, and your designated Training Center will schedule your program orientations and review sessions.
  • Professional In-Water Training: During your pool/confined water and open water sessions, you will adapt your instructional presentation styles, master emergency simulation drills specific to the course topic, and refine your group monitoring skills under expert supervision.
  • Certification: Once you have completed all training criteria, exams, or documentation validations, your SSI Training Center will process your approval. Your digital certification card for the specific specialty topic will appear instantly on your MySSI App.

  • Minimum Age: 18
  • Amount of Pool/Confined Water Sessions: 1 (Applicable for Seminar-based training)
  • Amount of Open Water Sessions: 1 (Applicable for Seminar-based training)
  • Maximum Training Depth: 40 meters / 130 feet
  • Suggested Duration: 6 to 8 hours
  • Certification Prerequisites: Open Water Instructor (OWI) or Assistant Instructor (AI) status depending on the specific specialty category.
